Build Career-Ready Skills Through Real-World Simulation
The ºÚÁÏÍø911’s Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center (ISIC) is a hands-on learning and research space where students strengthen clinical and professional skills in realistic, simulated settings. ISIC brings together learners across health disciplines to practice critical thinking, communication, and teamwork through team-based simulation experiences.
Explore Our Simulation Labs and Clinical Training Spaces
ISIC spans ºÚÁÏÍø911’s Portland and Biddeford campuses, offering flexible, state-of-the-art learning environments designed to mirror real-world clinical settings. In Biddeford, the center has dedicated space in the Harold Alfond Forum. In Portland, ISIC is located on the first floor of Innovation Hall, next to the Clinical Performance Center (CPC) in the Harold and Bibby Alfond Center for Health Sciences. Together, these spaces feature simulation labs, exam rooms, control and monitoring areas, and debriefing classrooms — each equipped with advanced audiovisual technology to support hands-on learning, collaboration, and reflection.
ISIC offers seven simulation labs with adjoining fully equipped control rooms, a central skills lab, and debriefing classrooms. The CPC features 20 exam rooms, a central monitoring room, and two dedicated debriefing rooms. All of our labs are flexible and fully equipped for audiovisual recording, presentations, and debriefing.

Vision and Mission
Innovative, Interprofessional Clinical Education
The Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center (ISIC) will be a premier simulation and clinical performance program in the United States, providing a welcoming and engaging learning and assessment environment that supports all students and faculty in their educational and professional development by:
- Fostering best practices in simulation-based education and clinical performance assessment.
- Providing team-based, interprofessional simulation and assessment experiences that model the communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving behaviors inherent in professional practice.
- Offering state-of-the-art, expertly maintained technologies and human simulation resources, including Standardized Patient methodology, that enhance transformative learning and objective clinical assessment.
- Demonstrating a commitment to confidentiality, standardization, equity, and mutual respect across all educational and assessment activities.
In this way, ISIC serves as an integrated center that challenges learners to:
- engage in continuous improvement and collaboration,
- master professional and clinical competencies, and
- reflect on personal and professional development for successful careers in contemporary and future practice settings.
Prepare Critically Thinking Health Professionals
Through a distinctive and integrated approach to experiential and transformational education, the Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center collaborates with faculty and academic programs to develop critically thinking health professionals.
ISIC supports both immersive simulation-based learning and standardized clinical performance assessment through a range of modalities, including high- and low-fidelity simulation and human simulation using Standardized Patient methodology. Together, these efforts prepare learners to thrive in a rapidly changing health care environment while ensuring equitable, consistent, and defensible assessment of clinical competence.
